A (stolen) running questionnaire

One of the bloggers I follow is Hollie in New Jersey at www.fueledbylolz.com.  She’s a ridiculously good runner and I like reading her race recaps – it gives me an idea of what it’s like at the front of the pack!  I’ll never be there so it’s nice to get the perspective!

Anyways, on her blog today she completed her answers to a running questionnaire from another blog.  I liked the idea and enjoyed reading the answers so figured I’d do the same!  Here goes:

Would you rather run along a beach path or on a mountain trail?

Mountain trail.  Absolutely no question.  Any activity in the mountains wins.

If you could choose the flavor of gatorade at your next race’s aid stations, what would it be?

Um, since I don’t know what Gatorade is, I’ll talk instead about the cherry flavoured sports beans I ate during the Liverpool Rock n Roll Marathon!  About mile 21 I was starting to die, and Camilla the pacer gave me these beans.  They were amazing!  I’ll want those at every aid station.  Mmm.

If I gave you a £100 gift card to a running store, what would be the first thing that you would purchase with it?

Anything from Crewroom – preferably in a really bright colour, they do a fab shade of pink.  The brighter, the better.  My ideal running outfit is one that Owain says hurts his eyes.  My new orange capris are a prime example, especially when I wear them with my bright pink X Screams.

Do you prefer to follow a training plan or wake up and decide then how far and how fast you want to run?

I’m more disciplined when I follow a training plan.  But still rubbish.  I like just running for the hell of it.  Preferably slowly.

Would you rather start your run with the uphill and end on the downhill or start your run with the downhill and end with the uphill?

Hmm, in my head I’d prefer to finish with the downhill and get the uphill over and done with, but my legs would be happier the other way round.  I take a while to warm up!

When you can’t run, what type of cross-training do you choose to do?

When I was training for the London Marathon with a knackered knee, I spent a huge amount of time on the Elliptical.  I know a lot of people hate them, but I love them, especially for HIIT.

What is your preference—>  Out and back, point to point or loop runs?

Loop!  My brain doesn’t like out and back.  Point to point is fine, as long as there’s transport to get me home! Preferably a chaffeur.

If you could recommend ANY running related item to a new runner, it would be a—>

Practically, it would be shop fitted trainers.  Otherwise it would be to buy the brightest kit you can.  It makes you smile.  And if you smile, you run faster.

Do you ever see any wild animals while out on your runs?

The odd squirrel and bunny rabbit.  I’ve had a few grim moments of treading on slugs, which then burst.  Always grim.

Ever gotten lost while out on a run?

Only when on a long run with Owain.  I’m scared of getting lost, hence why I never go exploring on my own.  Wussy.

If you could have one meal waiting and ready for you each time you got home from a run for the next 30 days… what would that meal be?

Hmm, I struggle to eat after a long run, but I could murder an ice cold coca cola.

Capris or shorts… what do you run in most often?

Capris.  I’d prefer to run in shorts but since I sadly don’t have a thigh gap I struggle with friction burns…

At what mile (or how many minutes) into your run does your body start to feel like it is warming up and ready to go?

A good 30 minutes or so. Perfect for parkrun… not!

What do you do with your key when you run?

Stick it in my capri pocket.

If you could relive any race that you have done in the past, which one what it be?

My first ever race, the Shifnal half marathon steeplechase in 2011.  I’d go back and tell myself to relax, that being last is fine, and to just enjoy it.

What has been your biggest motivation lately to get out the door to get your run on?

Umm, none.  I have no motivation at all.  An upcoming marathon should do the trick, but sadly it doesn’t appear to be!

When you go for a run, do you leave right from your front door or do you drive somewhere to start?

From the front door. The less effort required, the better the chances of me actually getting out there!

When running in daylight—>  are sunglasses a must or an annoyance?

A must!!  My Breo ones are a current favourite.  They don’t fall off my nose when I start sweating.

When you get tired, what keeps you from quitting?

A ridiculous stubborn streak!
